Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina and Pemberton Township Police Chief David H. Jantas announced that a second man has been charged in the fatal shooting of a 24-year-old man in the Sunbury Village neighborhood in 2017.
Brandon A. Clifton, 20, of the 400 block of White Pine Court in Pemberton Township, was charged with Murder (First Degree), Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose (Second Degree), Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons (Second Degree) and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Second Degree). The case will now be prepared for presentation to a Burlington County Grand Jury for possible indictment.
The charges relate to the fatal shooting of Shaquille Williams on March 21, 2017.
The investigation revealed that officers from the Pemberton Township Police Department were called to the 100 block of Kinsley Road on March 21, 2017 just before 9 p.m. for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers discovered Williams, who lived in the Browns Mills section of the township, inside of a vehicle with several gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Clifton is the second defendant to be charged in connection with the slaying of Williams. In November, Douglas Lewis, 23, of Fort Dix Road in Pemberton Township, was indicted on charges of Murder (First Degree), Conspiracy to Commit Murder (First Degree), Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose (Second Degree), Aggravated Assault (Second Degree), Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons (Second Degree) and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Second Degree).
Lewis has been held in the Burlington County Jail in Mount Holly since his arrest in October 2018. Clifton is presently incarcerated in the state prison system on an unrelated charge.
The case was investigated by detectives from the Pemberton Township Police Department and the Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit – Violent Crimes Section, and Crime Scene Unit. The lead investigators were BCPO MCU Detective Tony Luyber and Pemberton Township Police Detective Danielle Hann. The lead crime scene investigator was BCPO Detective Tim Horne.
The case will be prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Bob VanGilst, supervisor of the BCPO Major Crimes Unit – Violent Crimes Section.
All persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
