Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina and Pemberton Township Police Chief David H. Jantas announced that a Pemberton Township man has been charged with fatally shooting a man in the Sunbury Village section of the township early last year.
Douglas Lewis, 23, of Fort Dix Road, was charged with Murder (First Degree), Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose (Second Degree) Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons (Second Degree) and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Fourth Degree).
Lewis was taken into custody without incident Friday at the Burlington County Courts Facility by the Burlington County Sheriff’s Department Warrant Unit and members of the Prosecutor’s Office. A detention hearing will be held soon, and the case will then be prepared for presentation to a Grand Jury for possible indictment.
Officers from the Pemberton Township Police Department were called to the 100 block of Kinsley Road on March 21, 2017 just before 9 p.m. for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers discovered Shaquille Williams, 24, inside of a vehicle with several gunshot wounds.
Williams, who lived in the Browns Mills section of Pemberton Township, was pronounced dead at the scene. The motive for the shooting is still being investigated.
The case was investigated by detectives from the Pemberton Township Police Department and the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit – Violent Crimes Section, and Crime Scene Unit. The lead investigators are BCPO MCU Detective Tony Luyber and Pemberton Township Police Detective Danielle Hann.
The case will be prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Bob VanGilst, supervisor of the BCPO Major Crimes Unit – Violent Crimes Section.
