Burlington City Man Charged with Murder in Weekend Slaying

Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina and City of Burlington Police Chief Alan Snow announced that a man was arrested yesterday for fatally shooting a fellow Burlington City resident early Saturday morning near the intersection of Barclay and York Streets.

Thomas A. Thompson Jr., 39, was charged with Murder, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.

Thomas was taken into custody without incident Monday night in Bordentown Township by the Burlington County Sheriff’s Department Warrant Unit and the U.S. Marshal’s Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Thompson will face a detention hearing in the near future in Superior Court in Mount Holly. He will be prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Jamie Hutchison.

The investigation revealed that Thompson approached a vehicle driving along Barclay Street on October 6 at approximately 1:30 a.m. and fired into the open window, striking Hubert Moore Jr., 37, who was a front-seat passenger. Moore, of York Street, was pronounced dead at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro about 30 minutes later. The driver, who was the only other occupant, was not injured.

“I commend the skillful investigative effort that led to the immediate identification of the suspect, and the tenacity of the fugitive officers from the Burlington County Sheriff’s Department Warrant Unit and the U.S. Marshal’s Service task force that resulted in a quick and safe apprehension,” Prosecutor Coffina said. “This was solid police work all around. The residents of Burlington County are fortunate to be so effectively served by their law enforcement agencies.”

The investigation is being conducted by the Prosecutor’s Office and the City of Burlington Police Department. The lead investigators are BCPO Detective Tom LaRosa and City of Burlington Detective Corporal Ann Czajka.
